All honey has a mild antibacterial activity because it contains hydrogen peroxide, produced by an enzyme. However, most honey makers destroy the enzyme while heating honey to extract it from barrels.

Active Manuka Honey contains not only hydrogen peroxide but also a second even stronger antibacterial agent. Both the hydrogen peroxide and the second antibacterial component ­ unique to honey produce from manuka (Leptospermum) trees ­ is kept stable throughout the entire manufacturing process.
