Why Calcium?
Calcium plays a pivotal role in our bodily functions. It regulates
our heart beat, enables our muscles to function and builds and maintains
a healthy skeleton. Because the human body cannot produce calcium,
our body relies on an adequate daily intake.
The problem is that about 80 percent of women and 70 percent of
children do not achieve the recommended daily intake for calcium
(The Australian and New Zealand Medical Journal, 2000 Feb; 30(1):
21-7, “Calcium intakes among Australian women: Geelong Osteoporosis
Study.”). The solution is BIOACTIVE CALCIUM. CALCIUM
Osteoporosis Prevention
Our body loses calcium every day through shed skin, nails, hair
and general excretions. If our daily calcium intake is not suffi
cient, our body takes calcium from our bones. This causes our bones
to become weakened and prone to fracture. This is known as the disease,
OSTEOPOROSIS. All this can occur without our knowing and this is
why Osteoporis is known as ‘The Silent Thief ’.
Whilst Osteoporosis is incurable, it is largely preventable. Calcium
intake has been shown in numerous published clinical studies over
the full range of age groups from pre-pubertal children through
to the elderly to provide increased bone mineral density.
Calcium – Disease Prevention
Calcium intake has been found to have a preventive role in some
cancers, particularly COLON CANCER which is the second most commonly
diagnosed cancer in women and third in men. Some scientists have
found that keeping colon cancer away may be as simple as taking
a calcium supplement. Studies have shown that women taking more
than 800mg of calcium every day reduced their risk of colon cancer
as much as 46%. (The Year in Medicine, Time Magazine, December 5,
2005 and The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, March 2006.)
Calcium intake from supplements may also have a protective role
in PROSTATE CANCER – the leading cause of cancer deaths in
men. Calcium Carbonate
The calcium used in BIOACTIVE CALCIUM is calcium carbonate because
this has one of the highest levels of available calcium of any calcium
source. This helps in delivering maximum calcium per tablet. Calcium
carbonate has been proven in published clinical trials to have equal
bioavailability with milk (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
(2002; 76(6)).
Calcium and Women
The North American Menopause Society has stated that, “Although
the most defi nitive role for calcium in peri- and post-menopausal
women is in bone health, it is clear that adequate calcium intake
has implications that encompass a woman’s overall health.
Based on the available evidence, a strong statement can be made
regarding the importance of ensuring adequate calcium intake in
all women, particularly those in peri- or postmenopause".
Why vitamin D3 ?
Vitamin D3 is the active form of the vitamin and it helps to maintain
normal blood levels of calcium and promotes calcium absorption and
bone mineralization.
Why Inulin ?
Calcium is a very poorly absorbed mineral and in most adults only
about 30-35% of our calcium intake is actually absorbed. Numerous
published studies have shown that inulin signifi cantly enhances
the bioabsorption of calcium and other minerals.
Our combination of inulin with calcium is patented and exclusive
to our BIOACTIVE CALCIUM product.
In addition to assisting calcium absorbption, inulin aids digestive
health.
A condition which is common to most age groups is poor bowel function.
This leads to general discomfort and in some cases serious disease.
Inulin is a soluble dietary fi bre and a very effective “probiotic”
. Probiotics stimulate healthy/ benefi cial bacteria in the intestine.
This is important because to maintain healthy intestines we need
to have more benefi cial bacteria than pathogenic bacteria. The
probiotic effect of inulin has been shown to help our digestive
system work better resulting in improved nutritional value from
the food we eat and increased regularity.
Like calcium, Inulin has also been shown to produce a number of
other important effects on our health and well being. For example,
published studies have shown that intake of inulin can result in
a reduction in risk for some cancers such as breast cancer and colon
cancer.
Summary
There is a universal need for a regular calcium intake. We are confi
dent that a regular daily intake of our BIOACTIVE CALCIUM will not
only help with maintenance of good health and wellbeing but may
also help in the prevention of disease.
